Man City 31-year-old could make ‘bombshell’ transfer as ‘crazy’ Jose Mourinho tactic revealed

4 Min Read

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson is being eyed up by Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho for a summer transfer, according to a report.

The Brazil international is one of a handful of veteran Citizens stars who could be on the way out this summer, as Pep Guardiola prepares for a significant squad overhaul after a calamitous season.

Man City are still competing for the FA Cup and are now arguably the favourites to win the competition, but their Premier League reign is over as they lie fifth in the top-flight table.

The Citizens also suffered a gut-wrenching Champions League playoff exit to Real Madrid, where Ederson was in between the sticks both legs, but Stefan Ortega has started to make his claim for more frequent starts.

Ederson is also only contracted to the reigning English champions for another year, and given that an extension is unlikely, the Citizens are expected to be open to reasonable offers when the window re-opens.

The former Benfica man has inevitably been linked with a mega-money switch to the Saudi Pro League, but according to Turkish outlet Fanatik, Fenerbahce also want to sign Ederson in a ‘bombshell’ transaction.

The report adds that Mourinho’s side are now ‘testing the waters’ for the 31-year-old shot-stopper, and the former Manchester United and Chelsea boss is personally pursuing a move for Ederson.

The South American is allegedly one of two blockbuster transfers that Mourinho wants to complete this summer, as Fenerbahce are also working on a deal to sign Dusan Vlahovic from Juventus.

Mourinho’s side – who have supposedly ‘gone crazy’ with their plans for the summer – sit nine points below Galatasaray in the Turkish Super Lig table, albeit with a game in hand, and agonisingly lost to Rangers on penalties in the Europa League last 16.

Ederson has registered seven clean sheets in 29 appearances for Man City across all tournaments this season, taking his total for the English champions to 162 games from 361 matches since 2017.

City’s astonishing implosion this season has surely marked the end of the Guardiola golden era, and the exit of a certain Kevin De Bruyne would certainly represent the changing of the guard.

The Belgium international’s contract only runs until the end of the campaign, and an MLS club chief recently confirmed that he had held talks with the midfielder’s entourage over a move.

The likes of John Stones, Jack Grealish, Bernardo Silva, Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan and James McAtee could also be offloaded as Man City make room for potential new arrivals, several of whom have recently been assessed.

Man City return from the international break with a trip to Bournemouth for Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final, followed by the visit of Leicester City to the Etihad in the Premier League next Wednesday.
