Liverpool need to be busy in this summer transfer window.

Indeed, while the Reds are set to win the Premier League this season, the squad does still need something of a revamp.

Liverpool are still short in some key positions – most notably at centre-back.

Joel Matip hasn’t been replaced since his departure last summer, and while Liverpool were working on signing a centre-back last year, a deal didn’t come to fruition.

Heading into this summer, Liverpool have been linked with plenty of centre-back options.

Dean Huijsen has been linked to Liverpool, and according to Mark Douglas, speaking on The Redmen TV, Liverpool are the frontrunners to sign Huijsen if he decides to make another move within the Premier League.

Liverpool are the Premier League club most likely to sign Dean Huijsen

Douglas shared what he knows about Huijsen and Liverpool.

The journalist says that Real Madrid are looking at the defender, and that move could be likely.

However, Douglas also said that Liverpool are the Premier League team most likely to do this deal if Huijsen decides he wants to stay in England.

“I think if it was a Premier League club, I think, again, Liverpool are a really good bet to do it. But the problem is if you’ve got Real Madrid looking at him, you do wonder whether we will end up there because, you know, he obviously wants to play for the Spanish national team, he made his debut in this last international break. And I think, you know, it’s obviously if you are Spanish and you want to play for the Spanish national team, then Real Madrid kind of feels like a good fit,” Douglas said.

“The noises coming out of Bournemouth are that he’ll definitely leave. I mean, they don’t even, you know, I don’t think they’re even counting and seeing the fact that he’s going to stay.

“I think they know that he’s going to go. But it does. It has given them this kind of chance to make a 38 million pound profit in 12 months on a player (£50m release clause), and has kind of illustrated the fact that they’re a shop window for players to come in.

“So they’re kind of almost becoming like this second version of Brighton, if you will. So that’s great for them. In terms of Liverpool bringing him in, I think if it’s an English club, I think it’s probably going to be Liverpool.”

Liverpool targets that have signed for Real Madrid

This is an encouraging update for Liverpool fans, but, at the same time, it’s rather disheartening.

Indeed, while potentially signing Huijsen is an exciting prospect, if there’s any team in the world Liverpool don’t want to compete with on the transfer front, it’s Real Madrid.

Real Madrid have been a constant thorn in Liverpool’s side in the transfer window in recent times.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to join Real Madrid from Liverpool, while Madrid have a history of pinching Liverpool’s transfer targets too.

Liverpool wanted Aurelien Tchouameni back in 2022, but he joined Real Madrid instead.

Meanwhile, Liverpool were desperate to sign Jude Bellingham in the summer of 2023, but he ended up at Madrid too.

Liverpool held talks to sign Kylian Mbappe at one point too, but he’s now joined Madrid as well.

Real Madrid have a history of taking Liverpool’s top targets, and Huijsen could be a similar story here.
