Kimmich has really taken the reins these past few weeks.

Bayern Munich is in full celebration mode after securing the services of star midfielder Joshua Kimmich until 2029.

There have been reports circulating of executive discontent over Kimmich’s post-signing interview comments. But CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen appears to be forging a path forward of positivity, highlighting Kimmich’s leadership qualities this week and reiterating the importance the club placed on retaining him.

“That was one of the reasons why we wanted to extend his contract long-term,” Dreesen explained in comments captured by t-online journalist Julian Buhl (via @iMiaSanMia). “We’ve always told him that when Manuel Neuer retires, he should become our new captain. He’s a leader and a driving force, both for the national team and for us at the club. He demonstrated that impressively in these two matches against Italy, but also against Leverkusen.”

Indeed, the newly-minted Germany captain picked a good time to show up on the big stages for club and country. His Champions League and Nations League performances have him looking as irreplaceable as ever.
