Tottenham defender Cristian Romero is open to the possibility of a move to Atletico Madrid, talkSPORT understands.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone is a big admirer of his fellow Argentine ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

Romero is about to enter the final two years of his contract in north London, making Spurs vulnerable to an offer.

The 26-year-old first signed on loan from Atalanta in 2021 before his move was made permanent a year later.

He has made 115 Spurs appearances in all competitions across four seasons, during which time he won the World Cup with Argentina.

However, injury issues have limited his minutes, with this season in particular seeing spend around half of their fixtures on the sidelines.

Romero also appeared to take aim at Spurs’ ownership after their 4-3 home defeat to Chelsea in December, in which he went off injured.

He seemingly bemoaned the club’s level of investment compared to their rivals, although then apologised for his comments.

With his Spurs deal expiring in 2027, Atletico could emerge as his next club in the summer.

Their arch-rivals Real Madrid reportedly sent chief scout Juni Calafat to September’s north London derby to watch Romero.

Arsenal defender William Saliba is also eyed by the Spanish giants.

Atletico are currently involved in this season’s LaLiga title race along with Madrid and current leaders Barcelona.

Simeone’s side are third in the table and four points behind Barca, who have a game in hand and play against Osasuna tonight.

Meanwhile, Spurs are 14th in the Premier League and will travel to Chelsea next Thursday.

Their current league standing means qualification for European football next season looks unachievable.

However, this will change if they win the Europa League, with Spurs facing Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals next month.
