Steven Gerrard admitted he wishes he had played for two other clubs after leaving Liverpool for LA Galaxy in 2015.
Liverpool fans have been reminiscing about the loyalty of their former captain amid the reports that Trent Alexander-Arnold will be joining Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer.
News broke on Tuesday via talkSPORT that the Liverpool and England defender had agreed to join Madrid, following endless speculation linking him to the Bernabeu.
Alexander-Arnold will leave the club 21 years after joining the academy, with fans online left heartbroken that the ‘local lad’ didn’t opt for a similar career path as Gerrard.
Gerrard eventually left Anfield in 2015 to move to LA Galaxy, but speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap he admitted he regrets not playing in Glasgow.
“Up there, Celtic v Rangers, it’s constant. In press conferences, in the streets or the supermarket,” Gerrard explained.
“It’s intense. It’s an intense rivalry and unless you are actually in it you don’t realise how intense. I can say this now because I am out of it, both atmospheres are sensational.
“Really top. I almost say to myself now, out of hindsight, should I maybe have gone up to one of them rather than go to America? But I probably went to America for different reasons,” he added.
Gerrard has been involved in his fair share of Old Firm’s in his managerial career, and opened up on the pressure he felt to bring home the three points to the blue side of Glasgow.
“They are fantastic games to be involved in, not at the time, you just want them out of the way and you want the right result,” he continued.

“Rangers are a fantastic club, the support I had from the fans and the board and everyone connected,” he said.
The Liverpool icon also explained his reasoning behind leaving the club for Aston Villa in 2021, claiming family had to come first.
“I still have a lot of respect for Rangers and the fans. But I missed the Premier League and I had been away from my family for three and a half years,” he told Neville.
“I felt if we didn’t take this opportunity it might not come again.”
