Brazil reportedly makes final decision on coach Dorival Junior’s future after humiliating loss to Argentina

Argentina’s 4-1 win left lasting effects on the Brazil national team, prompting the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to reportedly make a final decision on coach Dorival Junior’s future.

Since Neymar’s injury, Brazil has struggled to reestablish itself as the powerhouse it once was. But after Tuesday’s humbling 4-1 defeat to Argentina, tensions reportedly reached a boiling point. In this limit position, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has reportedly made a final decision regarding the future of head coach Dorival Junior.

Following Tite’s departure after the 2022 World Cup, Brazil entered a transitional phase led by interim coaches Ramon Menezes and Fernando Diniz—neither of whom found success. Dorival was appointed in January 2024, but has failed to lift Brazil into the top three of the CONMEBOL standings for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, prompting the federation to consider a drastic change.

According to Fabrizio Romano and UOL Esporte, the CBF has already decided to part ways with Dorival Junior, effective immediately. While a formal meeting with CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues is scheduled for Friday afternoon, sources indicate the decision has already been made and is irreversible.

The heavy loss to Argentina in Buenos Aires appears to have been the final straw in what many view as an underwhelming tenure. Critics pointed to Dorival’s inability to make tactical adjustments during matches, an issue that was once again evident against Lionel Scaloni’s side.

Concerns began to surface during the 2024 Copa America, when Dorival called up several players unlikely to be part of Brazil’s World Cup plans. The team’s elimination in the quarterfinals at the hands of Uruguay marked its worst Copa América performance since 2016.

Should Dorival officially depart, he will leave with a record of 7 wins, 6 draws, and 3 losses in 16 matches, with 27 goals scored and 21 conceded. Brazil currently sits fourth in the World Cup qualifying standings. While qualification is not yet in jeopardy, the team’s performances have failed to inspire confidence.

Potential replacements for Dorival Junior

With the 2026 World Cup less than 18 months away, the CBF must act quickly to secure a coach capable of meeting the expectations of a demanding fanbase. Several names have emerged as potential replacements, with a clear preference reportedly leaning toward a foreign coach.

According to UOL Esporte, the CBF has not yet reached out to any candidates, but Jorge Jesus and Abel Ferreira are under consideration. On the domestic front, former full-back Filipe Luis has been mentioned, though his lack of experience may count against him.

One name long linked with the position is Carlo Ancelotti. However, the Italian coach shut down speculation on whether he was called for the job on Friday during a press conference: “No, simply no. The contract is clear, and I have nothing to add to that. I have great affection for the Brazil national team, its players, and its fans, but I have a contract with Real Madrid.”
