There have been a number of centre-backs in the Premier League era who could be considered underrated.
Indeed, there are a number of centre-halves who didn’t get the credit they necessarily deserved when they were in the Premier League.
Antonio Rudiger was an underrated player according to Dominic Solanke, while James Maddison has claimed that Cristian Romero is still very underrated.
Speaking on the Papa Pincus YouTube channel, Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen has now been asked to name who he believes to be the most underrated centre-back in Premier League history.
The Spaniard noted that, at the age of 19, he doesn’t necessarily remember everyone, but he does think that Joel Matip is among the most underrated centre-halves in the history of the league.
Dean Huijsen names Joel Matip as the Premier League’s most underrated centre-back ever
Huijsen was asked to name who he believes is the most underrated Premier League centre-back ever.
The Bournemouth defender had to think for a while, but, ultimately, he named Joel Matip as his pick.
“Who do you think is the most underrated Premier League centre-back of all-time?” Huijsen was asked.
“It’s a good question. Obviously I’m young so I haven’t seen much of the past, but from what I have seen, maybe Joel Matip,” Huijsen said.
“He did it for so long, he was playing with Van Dijk,” Matip said.
What Dean Huijsen said about playing for Liverpool
Huijsen spoke highly of Matip, and it is interesting to hear the Spaniard speak about a former Liverpool defender in this way.
Indeed, Liverpool have been strongly linked with Huijsen in recent times, and later on in the interview, he spoke about what it must be like to play for the Reds.
Huijsen noted that it must be very difficult to play for Liverpool, claiming that the whole world is looking at you and there’s a lot of pressure attached to that.
“The same as I was saying about Barcelona, I don’t think it’s easy to play for Liverpool. There’s the pressure, the whole world is looking at you, there’s the Champions League and the Premier League,” Huijsen said.
Of course, Huijsen may soon have to get used to this type of pressure. After all, Huijsen is being linked with Real Madrid, and there’s no bigger stage than that for any player at the top level.
At the age of just 19, you can understand why Huijsen may view playing for a top club as a daunting task, but after coming through at Juventus and playing for Roma on loan, he already has plenty of experience on that front.
