Over the years, Everton managers have gone on to get some incredible jobs after leaving Goodison Park.
Indeed, Carlo Ancelotti became the Real Madrid manager after leaving Everton, while Ronald Koeman became the Barcelona manager after his sacking on Merseyside.
On top of that, Frank Lampard went back to Chelsea a couple of years ago after leaving Everton.
Sean Dyche hasn’t been so lucky. Dyche was sacked by Everton a few months ago, and he remains out of work.
However, speaking on The Rest is Football, Dyche has been discussing his abilities as a manager, and he’s suggested that he could do a job at a top club, namely Arsenal.
Sean Dyche says he could manage Arsenal
Dyche spoke about an incident a few years ago when Paul Merson tipped him for the Arsenal job.
The former Everton boss says he received a lot of stick after these comments.
Gary Lineker then stirred the pot, asking Dyche if he believes he could manage a team like Arsenal, to which he confidently responded, claiming he could do a good job with the Gunners.
“I’ll tell you a funny version of it. Cause you know, I don’t even remember a number of years ago, Merse made a comment about me managing Arsenal,” Dyche said.
“I got hammered for it.
“No, I got hammered for it. And I was like, I haven’t even said anything. No one’s even asked me.
“I got battered. Fans going, he thinks he can manage Arsenal. I didn’t say anything.
“I was going, what are you talking about? I didn’t say a word. So that’s my point about myths.
“They just grow out of nothing. It’s just like.
“My next question. Do you think you could manage Arsenal?” Lineker asked.
“Yeah, of course. I think I could manage anyone. I don’t exactly, I don’t suffer with a lack of confidence, Gary, that’s for sure,” Dyche said.
Sean Dyche compared to Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino
Dyche says that he could do a job at Arsenal, but, in this instance, Arsenal are just a stand-in metaphor for any top club.
It’s easy to scoff at the idea of Dyche managing a top club. After all, Dyche’s style of play has been criticised over the years.
However, Mikel Arteta has been compared to Tony Pulis in the past, and that style of play can work at the top level.
Dyche has had some brilliant results in the Premier League over the years, and other managers who have achieved less have received greater opportunities.
Indeed, look at the likes of Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino, they ended up at Chelsea and Tottenham respectively after spells at Brighton and Southampton respectively, but there’s an argument to make that Dyche did a better job than both when he was at Burnley.
Sean Dyche at Burnley | Graham Potter at Brighton | Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton | |
---|---|---|---|
Games | 425 | 134 | 60 |
Wins | 152 | 43 | 23 |
Draws | 114 | 43 | 18 |
Losses | 159 | 48 | 19 |
Win percentage | 36% | 32% | 38% |
Best Premier League finish | 7th | 9th | 8th |
Dyche will probably be overlooked for the top jobs due to his style of play, but based purely on results compared to resources, there aren’t many managers in recent Premier League history who have done better than Dyche.
