It’s been a tough few weeks for Liverpool.
Of course, Liverpool are on course to win the Premier League, but over the last month or so, it’s been disappointment after disappointment at Anfield.
Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League by PSG, before losing the Carabao Cup final to Newcastle.
To make matters that much worse, Trent Alexander-Arnold now looks set to join Real Madrid in the summer as reports have emerged that a deal is close to being done.
Speaking on the Sky Sports Essential Football Podcast, Jamie Carragher has been discussing Alexander-Arnold’s impending move to Spain, and he says that he doesn’t want Liverpool fans to be bitter or nasty about the right-back.
Jamie Carragher says he doesn’t want Liverpool fans to turn on Trent Alexander-Arnold
Carragher spoke about Alexander-Arnold.
The pundit says he will be disappointed if the right-back heads to Madrid, which, at this point, looks very likely.
However, he implored fans to not turn on the defender.
“He’s been a brilliant player for Liverpool. And if he goes on, yes, I’ll be disappointed. But I really hope it doesn’t get, you know, nasty where people are wanting them to sort of fail at Real Madrid or not for it not to go well for him,’ Carragher said.
“He’s made his choice. It will upset some people. It will taint his legacy slightly.
“I have no doubt about that. But if he goes there, I hope it goes well for him. But I hope it goes even better for Liverpool.”
Liverpool fans turned on Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez
Carragher doesn’t want Liverpool fans to turn on Trent Alexander-Arnold, but, unfortunately, emotions will be running high here.
Let’s not forget, Liverpool fans have experienced this sort of thing in the past, and the reaction is rarely ever positive.
Steven Gerrard nearly left Liverpool for Chelsea in 2005, and around that time, Reds fans were burning shirts outside of Anfield with Gerrard’s name on the back.
Meanwhile, Luis Suarez has been subject to boos upon his return to Anfield with both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the past as well.
Robbie Fowler didn’t like the way Suarez left Liverpool, and it seemingly left a bitter taste in fans’ mouths too.
Football is a very emotive sport, and, unfortunately, it’s hard to see Alexander-Arnold leaving Anfield with the good graces and well-wishes of the fans.
