Man City transfer news: Pep Guardiola’s side making ‘big push’ to hijack Liverpool’s £33.5m Trent Alexander-Arnold replacement mission

Manchester City are reportedly plotting a move for Liverpool-linked Jeremie Frimpong in the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old is allegedly ready to seek pastures new having spent the last four-and-a-half year at Bayer Leverkusen, where he has established himself as one of the best right wing-backs in world football.

Frimpong has played 182 times for Leverkusen across all competitions and was an influential member of Xabi Alonso‘s invincible side that won the Bundesliga title without losing a single match last season; they also won the DFB-Pokal and reached the Europa League final.

After recording an impressive 14 goals and 10 assists in 47 games last season, Frimpong has since chipped in with four goals and 11 assists in 40 matches so far this season for a Leverkusen side sitting second in the Bundesliga table and six points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

The Netherlands international’s impressive form in Germany has caught the eye on several top European clubs including Liverpool, who are understood to have identified the attack-minded full-back as a potential replacement for Real Madrid-bound Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Man City ready to rival Liverpool or Frimpong signature

A recent report claims that Liverpool have held initial talks over the potential signing of Frimpong, while Reds head coach Arne Slot is said to be in direct contract with his Dutch compatriot over a summer switch to Anfield.

However, Liverpool are set to face stern competition for Frimpong’s signature from Premier League rivals Man City, as TEAMtalk claims that Pep Guardiola‘s side are planning to make a ‘big push’ to sign the defender.

Sources have stated that it is likely Frimpong will leave Leverkusen this summer and Man City are one of the teams ‘very keen’ to recruit him.

Frimpong is yet to make a final decision on his future, but interested suitors are aware that his contract – which runs out in June 2028 – includes a €40m (£33.5m) release clause.

Could Man City beat Liverpool to Frimpong signing?

Man City are on the lookout for a new right-back this summer as 34-year-old Kyle Walker – currently on loan at AC Milan – is expected to leave the club permanently this summer.

Guardiola has experimented with Matheus Nunes at right-back since Walker’s departure in January, while Rico Lewis is Man City’s only natural right-back option in their current squad, but like Nunes, he has struggled for consistency when called upon this term.

Although Frimpong has primarily operated as a wing-back at Leverkusen, he began his career as a right-back and spent nine years of his youth career at Man City between 2010 and 2019, before joining Celtic at the age of 19.

Frimpong spent two-and-a-half years at Celtic, making 51 first-team appearances, before joining Leverkusen in January 2021 and it is understood that the Scottish Premiership giants will be due a ‘big sell-on clause’ if the defender is sold by Leverkusen this summer.

Man City will boost their chances of beating Liverpool to the signing of Frimpong if they can qualify for next season’s Champions League; they currently sit fifth in the Premier League table and only one point behind Chelsea in fourth with nine games left to play.
