Not Real Madrid: Spain giant reportedly pushes to sign Argentina star Cristian Romero

After drawing interest from Real Madrid, another Spanish giant is now reportedly pushing to sign Argentina star center-back Cristian Romero.

Real Madrid emerged as one of the most prominent clubs interested in Argentina center-back Cristian Romero last summer, but the financial commitment would have stretched their budget. With Los Blancos yet to make a formal offer, another Spanish powerhouse is reportedly pushing to sign the Argentina international for next season.

Romero has established himself as one of the most reliable center-backs, known for his physicality, aggression, pace, and excellent ball control in build-up plays, both for Argentina and Tottenham Hotspur. Now, the defender has attracted not only Real Madrid but also a city rival that is reportedly eager to secure his services.

According to Givemesport‘s Ben Jacobs, Atletico Madrid has placed Cristian Romero high on their list of summer targets. The push to sign him has been driven by coach Diego Simeone, who believes Romero could become one of the top center-backs in the world.

A key factor that could facilitate Romero’s signing is Tottenham’s stance on a potential sale. Initially considered indispensable, Romero was valued at around €72 million. However, with the defender entering the final two years of his contract, a sale has become a more plausible option for Tottenham to avoid losing him for free.

As reported, Atletico Madrid has already made initial contact with Romero’s representatives, aiming to convince the center-back with the lure of UEFA Champions League football and a squad full of fellow Argentinians. While Real Madrid remains an admirer of Romero, Atletico’s expected asking price for him is around €40 million.

Romero’s rocky 2024-25 season

Romero has been a key figure for Argentina, playing a central role in their backline during their 2021 Copa America victory and their 2022 World Cup triumph. This has solidified his status as a world-class player. However, the 2024-25 season has not been kind to the defender.

Early in the season, Romero suffered a ligament injury in his right toe, sidelining him for three games. His biggest setback came after he recovered, when he sustained a muscular tear in his quadriceps. The initial recovery timeline was set at six weeks, but the defender struggled to regain full fitness.

After his injury in December 2024, Romero made his return in March, missing 20 games for Tottenham due to the tear. He has since returned to action with both the national team and his club, featuring in 17 games so far this season, although his appearances have been limited due to lingering fitness issues.
