It’s not looking too good…

Bayern Munich recorded a tough 3-2 victory over St. Pauli thanks to a brace from Leroy Sané, however, it was not all smiles at full time. At around the 87th minute, Hiroki Itō fell to the floor, picking up an injury in the same leg as the one he had a metatarsal fracture in earlier this season. Following extensive treatment, it was deemed that he would not be able to continue, forcing Bayern to finish the game with 10 men.

Sporting director Christoph Freund provided an update on the defender’s injury post-game: “He has pain in his foot. We’ll do an MRI now and hope it’s not too serious. He was back in really good shape and fit, having played the full 90 minutes in both international matches for Japan,” as captured by @iMiaSanMia

Jan-Christian Dreesen further added: “It’s too early to say anything. We’ll examine him later. He’s obviously totally disappointed. There’s something wrong with his foot, but we can’t say what it is yet,” speaking to reporter Julian Buhl (via @iMiaSanMia)

Head coach Vincent Kompany echoed the same sentiments, calling for calm: “He felt the same foot where he had problems this season, so that’s not great for us. It’s difficult to say now, he’ll have tests and then we’ll see. Let’s not jump to conclusions now, but that’s what he felt.”

Itō was further spotted limping out of the stadium to undergo tests:

This is certainly terrible news as it means that Bayern’s likely replacement for Alphonso Davies, who suffered an ACL injury earlier this week, might also be out for the upcoming games. Bayern fans will be hoping for the best possible outcome, because in case this is serious, Bayern will be left with even fewer options in defense (particularly at left-back) in a crucial run of games, including the upcoming Champions League quarterfinal against Inter Milan.
