Man United transfer news: Red Devils ‘set’ Alejandro Garnacho asking price with 20-year-old’s future at Old Trafford in doubt

4 Min Read

Manchester United have reportedly set an asking price of £51m for Alejandro Garnacho, with the Red Devils open to selling the Argentina international during this summer’s transfer window.

Garnacho was heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford in January, with Chelsea and Napoli both said to be keen on the 20-year-old, who has scored nine times and registered eight assists in 45 appearances for the Red Devils this term.

The attacker ultimately remained with the 20-time English champions beyond the winter deadline, but there has recently been fresh speculation surrounding his future, with Man United allegedly open to a sale.

According to Fichajes, the Red Devils want £51m for the ex-Atletico Madrid youngster, with offers in the region of that amount likely to be accepted, as any sale would be hugely beneficial to the club from a financial point of view.

Garnacho’s departure would go down as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, allowing Man United to reinvest in their squad during a difficult period from a financial and sporting point of view.

Man United ‘willing to sell Garnacho for £51m’

The forward made the move to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in October 2020, and he has represented the club on 131 occasions at first-team level, scoring 24 goals and registering 17 assists in the process.

There remain question marks surrounding his suitability for a Ruben Amorim team, though, as his best work comes as a left-sided attacker, and that position no longer exists in the current set-up at Old Trafford.

Garnacho is instead being asked to operate as a narrow number 10, and he has struggled to show consistency during a difficult campaign for the 20-time English champions.

Napoli are still said to be keen on the Argentina international, while there have also been suggestions of interest from his former club Atletico, who may be in the market for a new left-sided attacker during the summer market.

Could Mainoo also leave Man United this summer?

There is also speculation surrounding the future of Kobbie Mainoo, as like Garnacho, any sale of the academy product would count as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

Mainoo has had a frustrating campaign due to fitness issues, being restricted to just 25 appearances in all competitions, scoring once and registering one assist in the process.

The England international has recently been on the sidelines due to a muscular issue, but he is in the latter stages of his recovery process and is expected to return over the next couple of weeks.

Man United are allegedly struggling to come to an agreement with Mainoo over a new contract, with the 19-year-old believed to be ready to make the move abroad at the end of the season.

Inter Milan are said to be keen on the midfielder, who could leave for £70m during the summer market.
