Tottenham Hotspur are expected to have a big summer transfer window.
Spurs’ season has not gone to plan. Their whole campaign depends on the Europa League now after their dismal performances in the Premier League and the two domestic cups.
There is already a lot of speculation around the future of Ange Postecoglou, who could get sacked if he doesn’t win the Europa League this term.
Whether the Australian remains in charge or not, Tottenham will need new signings in the summer, and the sale of Cristian Romero could aid them in their pursuit of a top-class defender.
Tottenham could use Cristian Romero money to sign Marc Guehi
Romero’s time at Tottenham could be coming to an end this summer.
The Argentina international has been on Spurs’ books since 2021, and he has been one of their most important players. He was even named as the vice-captain last year.
However, after an injury-hit season in which Romero has taken aim at Tottenham’s medical staff, there is a chance this could be his final few months in North London.
Atletico Madrid are keen to sign Romero this summer, and with just two years left on his contract, he could be on the move.
If that happens, Tottenham will need to sign a new defender, and GiveMeSport have claimed that Spurs could use the money they get from Romero to ‘finance’ a deal for Marc Guehi.
Tottenham launched an ambitious £70 million bid to sign Guehi in the winter window, but Crystal Palace rejected that immediately.
The Eagles had set a £75 million price-tag in last summer’s transfer window (Mail), and Spurs’ offer – even though it was close to that figure – did not convince Palace.
In the summer, however, things could change as Guehi will have just one year left on his deal.
How much money could Tottenham make from selling Cristian Romero?
Romero was one of Tottenham’s most valuable players before the start of this season.
Spurs had zero interest in letting the Argentine go back then. Daniel Levy demanded over £60 million to sell Romero at the time.
But, that stance has softened now, and reports have claimed that Tottenham will listen to offers around £45 million to sell Romero this summer.
Atletico Madrid, however, are hoping to sign Romero for £33 million, which falls well short of what Spurs would like for their star centre-half.
As things stand, £45 million is Tottenham’s asking price. It remains to be seen if Atleti will match that figure once the window opens.
