As one of the biggest football clubs in the world, Liverpool have had their fair share of legendary players representing the club.
From the legends of yesteryear like Ian Callaghan to contemporary icons such as Mohamed Salah, Reds fans across generations have had plenty of players to call their heroes.
Prior to Jurgen Klopp joining Liverpool, the team was not doing particularly well, but over the past few years, the Reds have been dining at the top table once again.
Now, John Terry has named a player currently plying his trade at Anfield as one of the Premier League’s best players of all time in his position.
John Terry names Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk among the Premier League’s best centre-backs
The player in question is Virgil van Dijk, who has been one of Liverpool’s most important players in recent years.
Eyebrows were raised when Liverpool spent £75million on Van Dijk in 2018, but he has more than justified the Reds’ hefty outlay.
Terry was interviewed by Sportbible this week and was asked which four players he’d pick in his Mount Rushmore of Premier League centre-backs.
Van Dijk was one of the players he picked, describing him as a “top, top player” for whom “the game looks very easy”.
Terry said: “I’m going to go Virgil van Dijk, in terms of a bit more modern era to myself and Rio (Ferdinand).
“I just think he’s been an absolute stand-out. The game looks very easy for him, very comfortable. I think he’s a top, top player.”
Terry also picked himself, Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand and Arsenal legend Tony Adams.
What is being said about Virgil van Dijk’s Liverpool future
Liverpool have got themselves in a bit of a difficult spot this season with regards to the contracts of three of their main players.
It looks like Trent Alexander-Arnold is a lost cause at this point, with Real Madrid looking likely to get their hands on him.
Van Dijk and Salah are also out of contract in a few months’ time, though the situation with the defender and forward seems more positive.
Salah’s contract talks are going well, while Liverpool believe Van Dijk will re-sign – however, neither deal has been struck yet.
Robbie Fowler presented an interesting theory recently, suggesting that Salah and Van Dijk’s deals were done, but they haven’t been announced due to Alexander-Arnold’s situation.
However, James Pearce said such a theory was “nonsense”, saying Liverpool would be quick to announce contract renewals for Salah and Van Dijk in that case.
Until the ink is drink on the paper and the official announcements start doing the rounds, the situation will remain tense for Liverpool fans.
