Vincent Kompany laments “bitter” ending to 3-2 win over FC St. Pauli

The player inside Kompany wants nothing but clean sheets.

On Saturday, Bayern Munich stretched their lead atop the Bundesliga table back to six points after a 3-2 home win against FC St. Pauli. Bayern scored first and held a lead for more than half the game, but a late goal from Lars Ritzka kept the crowd on the edge of their seats until the end of the game.

In the 85th minute, Vincent Kompany brought on his final substitutes, Thomas Müller and Josip Stanišić, to see out the dying minutes with a two-goal lead. However, disaster struck when Hiroki Itō grabbed his foot and Bayern had to finish out the match with only 10 men on the pitch.

“St. Pauli is a well organised team and don’t concede many goals and chances,” said Kompany (via @iMiaSanMia). “So I prepared the team to be in it for the entire game and not become too impatient if we don’t score. We had good chances in the second half, but I have to say that St. Pauli also had their moments in the first half. Overall, if it wasn’t for the last 5 minutes and especially the injury of Hiroki, I would’ve been very satisfied. The feeling of losing Hiroki leaves a bitter taste, but it doesn’t excuse anything for the future. We are one game closer and we have to win another 7 games.”

Thanks to a massive goal differential advantage, Bayern can reclaim the Bundesliga title with five wins in the final seven games even if Bayer Leverkusen wins the rest of their league matches.
