Bayern Munich legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge wary of Inter Milan ahead of Champions League clash

Bayern Munich will have its hands full with Inter Milan…

Bayern Munich supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge took the pitch for both Bayern and Inter Milan during his playing days and is expecting quite the battle when the two clubs meet in the Champions League.

“Italian football, as we’ve recently seen with the national team, is no longer playing pure catenaccio, but is also playing very modern football. We saw that in the two international matches against Italy. Inter are similar in this respect, but their defense is top-notch. Our strikers will have to play well to create chances,” Rummenigge told Sport1’s Stefan Kumberger (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Up front, Inter still have two top strikers in Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram, who are always capable of causing problems for the defense.

“When I played there, the Italian league was what the Premier League is today. Serie A was the best league in the world back then, and all the top players were there. Michel Platini, Paulo Falcao, Sócrates, Zico, and many more. It was certainly enjoyable to play there, but also to live there. For us as a family, it was a fantastic experience in every respect.”

Rummenigge will see Bayern Munich host the first leg, which some see as a disadvantage because it means the second leg will be at San Siro. Rummenigge is not so sure about that rationale.

“I don’t think it matters anymore. I always used to prefer playing away first. But since the away goals rule has been abolished, that’s no longer an advantage,” Rummenigge stated.

Finally, Rummenigge was asked about the possibility of potentially being the de facto home side for the Champions League finale — something many in the club are striving for.

“First of all, I have to give the team a huge compliment for the way they played against Leverkusen. They delivered two great games. Scoring five goals against Leverkusen and not conceding a single goal is a great result in itself. But in the Champions League, you have to approach each round with a touch of humility,” said Rummenigge.
