Rotherham United have announced that they have sacked manager Steve Evans.

Last April, the Millers appointed their former boss in the hope of him leading a promotion charge on their return to League One.

Instead, Rotherham have never challenged for immediate promotion back to Championship, a slow start leading to a mid-table finish quickly becoming the aim.

However, Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at home to struggling Crawley Town – their third in four games – has led to the club’s hierarchy opting to make a change at a pivotal period of the season.

Rotherham release Evans statement

A statement read: “Rotherham United can confirm that, following a meeting between the Chairman and Manager this morning, the club have parted company with First Team Manager Steve Evans together with Paul Raynor, Gary Mills and Ian Pledger, with immediate effect.

“Steve was re-appointed in April last year, taking charge of 50 games in all competitions during his most recent tenure.

“Everyone at Rotherham United would like to thank Steve, Paul and their coaching team for all their efforts and wish them well in their future endeavours.

“The club can also confirm that Matt Hamshaw, together with Andy Warrington and other staff to be confirmed will take charge of first team matters with immediate effect until the end of the season.”

Evans departs the New York Stadium having recorded 18 wins, 11 draws and 21 defeats from his 50 matches in charge.

Meanwhile, Hamshaw took charge of two Derby County matches earlier in the season, earning two draws in the Championship, before stepping down from his role as first-team coach at Pride Park upon the arrival of John Eustace.

Hamshaw, born and bred in Rotherham, is no stranger to the Yorkshire outfit having previously been on the coaching staff under Evans’s predecessor Paul Warne.

What next for Rotherham?

With eight matches remaining, Rotherham sit in 16th position in the League One table and nine points clear of the relegation zone.

They are next in action on Tuesday evening when they square off against Northampton Town, a team that sits just two points adrift of them in 19th spot.
