Lionel Messi had savage response when Andy Murray asked if he can do it on a cold rainy night in Stoke

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner gave his thoughts to the British tennis legend.

Lionel Messi gave a hilarious response when asked if he could do it on a rainy night in Stoke by tennis legend Andy Murray.

Messi, 37, was in attendance at the Miami Open when he bumped into Murray, 37, who is a three-time tennis Grand Slam title winner but now coaches Novak Djokovic.

The pair linked up earlier this week following Djokovic’s victory over Grigor Dimitrov in the tournament’s semi-final, which took place on Friday.

And like most people do, Murray asked the great Argentinian for a photograph, but fans were left stunned by the caption.

The Scot posted a snap of him and the Inter Miami star accompanied by the caption: “I asked him if he could do it on a cold rainy night in Stoke.

“He responded, ‘Callate la boca,’ which I think means yes in Spanish.”

However, Murray’s Spanish clearly isn’t as good as his ability on the court, when translated what Messi said actually means ‘Shut your mouth’.

Of course, this question was often put forward when pundits and fans discussed whether Messi could cope with the physicality of the Premier League – although he has scored 27 times against English opposition, mostly in the Champions League.

One Football reports that the phrase was originally used by former Sky Sports pundit and professional footballer Andy Gray when he put forward an argument insinuating that Barcelona’s tactics under then-manager Pep Guardiola were easier to implement in Spanish conditions as opposed to the often torrid weather in northern England in places such as Stoke, who were managed by Tony Pulis at the time.

This is not the first time the question has been put to Messi.

Back in 2018, Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague revealed that he was once asked the Argentinian if he could perform on a “wet, cold night in Stoke” to which the 37-year-old replied: “They should have seen the pitches in Rosario I used to play in, and I was quite good there too.”

These days, Messi is at Inter Miami and is unlikely to find himself playing in treacherous conditions at the club’s Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
