England managers: Can you name every person to have been permanent boss of the Three Lions?

2 Min Read

Thomas Tuchel has just taken charge of his first two matches as England manager, guiding the Three Lions to victories over Albania and Latvia in World Cup qualifiers at Wembley Stadium.

However, back in 1946, Walter Winterbottom – who was later knighted for his services – was appointed as the first-ever full-time England manager and remained at the helm for 16 years.

Winterbottom had made 26 league appearances for Manchester United before World War II, and he was brought into the England dugout without any previous managerial experience.

In 139 matches in charge, Winterbottom would deliver 78 victories, 33 draws and 28 defeats, featuring in four World Cup finals during that reign between 1950 and 1962.

England would win just three of their 14 matches on that stage under Winterbottom, albeit still reaching the quarter-finals of the 1954 and 1962 editions.

While Winterbottom is best known for his role as England boss, he was equally influential behind the scenes, creating a national coaching scheme at Shropshire-based Lilleshall that has provided the pathway for a wide array of coaches to come through the system and put together managerial careers.

On a day when Winterbottom would have celebrated his 112th birthday, Sports Mole takes the opportunity to challenge you to name every permanent England manager in history.
