Could this tournament get any more gaudy?
FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup will debut in the summer of 2025, mere months away at the time of writing. FIFA have always tried to play up this new tournament’s importance and the finances involved with it, boasting that it would give every club that participated extraordinary amounts. Key to this financial might would be selling the streaming rights for a big fee, with FIFA initially angling for a $4 billion valuation. The governing footballing body, however, were left embarrassed as their asking price saw Apple completely walk away and left the tournament without any sponsors or broadcast right holders merely 7 months before the competition kicked off. This was a disaster in the making.
Fortunately for FIFA, DAZN stepped in with a $1 billion offer to secure the rights, with many rumors suggesting that the Saudi PIF was behind DAZN’s offer. So despite FIFA only securing a quarter of their initial asking price, they have now confirmed, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, that this tournament will still be extremely lucrative for participating clubs:
FIFA confirm that the winner of the Club World Cup will receive $125m, the biggest prize money for a club football tournament over a seven-game format. The likes of Bayern, Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid and PSG are expected to receive a minimum participation fee of almost $40m, plus the win-by-win or round-by-round prize money.
Many clubs, like Bayern Munich, have spoken about the desire to compete for another trophy as a reason to be at the tournament. But, clearly, the main motivator for these clubs will be the money they will receive for continuing to overwork their players.
