Liverpool are firm favourites to clinch the Premier League crown. However, they must bounce back from a terrible week that saw them knocked out of the Champions League by Paris St-Germain and a League Cup final defeat against Newcastle United before the international break. A massive test awaits them on Wednesday night as they are set to host Merseyside rivals Everton to resume their quest for the coveted crown.

The Toffees have been a resurgent force since David Moyes’ return. While they have climbed up the league ladder under the Scotsman’s tutelage, five draws and a win in their last six encounters tell two stories about them. They gave up leads against Manchester United and Wolves but scripted late comebacks in the remaining fixtures, including a dramatic last-gasp equalizer against the Reds in the final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park.

Defence

Alisson Becker returned early from his international duty following a concussion against Colombia. The Brazil ‘number 1’ is expected to recover in time and replace Caoimhin Kelleher, who got the nod against the Magpies in the League Cup final.

Liverpool have serious concerns on the right as Trent Alexander-Arnold, his understudy Conor Bradley, and the versatile Joe Gomez remain sidelined with injury woes. Jarell Quansah might once again slot in as a makeshift right-back, leaving Arne Slot with no alternative to the central defensive pair Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk. Andrew Robertson should feature from the left ahead of Kostas Tsimikas.

Midfield

Ryan Gravenberch was also sent back to Liverpool as an injury precaution. But the ever-present Dutchman is believed to be available for the midweek encounter after a much-needed two-week break. Alexis Mac Allister must partner with him deep down the midfield to make box-to-box runs and shift the formation. Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo could be involved at some stage to add flexibility and freshness in the centre of the pitch.

With 27 goals and 17 assists in 29 Premier League games, Mohamed Salah is running riot with his flair, finesse and exquisite finishing traits from the right-hand flank. Dominik Szoboszlai has exhibited his all-round ability despite being lined up as a ‘number 10’, but the gaffer should opt for fit-again Cody Gakpo down the left with Luis Diaz failing to impress in recent games. Federico Chiesa must be involved more frequently as he has shown his intent and commitment in limited gametime.

Attack

Neither Diogo Jota nor Darwin Nunez has lived up to the expectations while spearheading the attack. Yet the pace, power and physicality of the Uruguayan could rile up the visitors and trigger the Anfield crowd in one of the world’s most hostile derbies.
