Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has revealed he has told Bruno Fernandes that he will not leave the club this summer, despite reported interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Fernandes has been Man United’s brightest spark in a difficult season, having scored 16 goals and provided 16 assists in 44 competitive appearances this term.

The Portugal international is the only Man United player who has hit double figures for goals or assists in the 2024-25 campaign.

Fernandes has been in particular fine form in recent times, having scored seven goals and contributed three assists in his last seven club appearances.

The midfielder’s impressive performances have led to speculation linking him with a potential move to Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

However, Amorim has insisted that the Man United captain will remain at Old Trafford beyond the end of the current season.

“It’s not going to happen,” Amorim told reporters when he was asked about the transfer rumours ahead of Tuesday’s Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest.

When asked why he was so certain, Amorim said: “That is the challenge. I want Bruno here. We want to win the Premier League again, we want the best players with us. He’s still so young because he plays 55 games every season.

“Between assists and goals, he’s there for 30 at least. He’s the player we want here, he’s not going anywhere. We are in control of the situation. I feel that he’s really happy here. He understands what we want to do.

Fernandes “really feels” Man United

“He’s one more supporter of Manchester United, he really feels it. Sometimes the frustration that you and everybody sees, and says: ‘it’s not a good thing for the captain’ – it’s a sign that he wants it so bad.

“This is the kind of player we want. He’s not going anywhere because I already told him.”

Man United are under no immediate pressure to sell Fernandes, who is under contract until the summer of 2027, with an option to extend by a further 12 months.

Fernandes has spent nearly five years at Old Trafford, during which time he has helped the club win the FA Cup and the EFL Cup.

The Portuguese will hope to collect another piece of silverware in this season’s Europa League, which represents the only viable route for Man United to secure European qualification for next season.
