To date, there has not been any communication between Bayern and representatives of Nico Williams’ regarding a potential transfer.

Bayern Munich is still pressing on to fight for both the Bundesliga and Champions League titles this season, but there has already been heavy squad planning going on in the background, spearheaded by board member for sport Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund. Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies and Joshua Kimmich have all signed new deals, which was the primary focus for this season as far as current Bayern player’s contracts are concerned, but the club could also be busy in this summer’s transfer window to come.

Bayern has already made it more than clear that Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz is their number one transfer target for the summer and the front office, in concert with the supervisory and executive boards, has been working on financial maneuvers to ensure there would be enough funds to sign Wirtz from Die Werkself. Even though Wirtz would more than likely become the club’s record signing, there are still other targets Bayern has been monitoring.

Athletic Bilbao’s and Spain international Nico Williams is one name that has internally been on Bayern’s transfer watchlist for some time now, but nothing has really progressed as of yet. Per new information from Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg (via @iMiaSanMia), all tracks leading to signing the player are currently “cold.” The club very much admires his profile as a player, but no concrete talks have taken place between either parties and Bayern does not want to spend too much money on players that would, in theory, be a surplus to requirements when considering the hefty transfer fee they would have to cough up for Wirtz.

For what it’s worth, Nico Williams is currently valued at around 70-million euros, which would certainly be a steep fee with the pursuit of Wirtz in mind. The two players, it could also be argued, occupy similar roles in attack as they both possess the ability to play as wide or central attackers in both their club and national team setups with Spain and Germany, respectively.

As is always the case, things could certainly change between now and the end of the season with Williams. After all, it was very recently reported that the Spanish winger is Eberl’s “dream” signing for the left wing position at Bayern and his proposed move to Barcelona last summer fell through the cracks, so the door cannot be entirely closed as of yet for a potential move to join the German Rekordmeister.
