This would be keep some folks sharp, eh?

Austria coach Ralf Rangnick was linked to Bayern Munich’s coaching vacancy last summer and, more recently, was linked to a position with Borussia Dortmund.

Now, though, there are some rumors that Bayern Munich could be looking to bring in Rangnick, who might want to leave his position with Austria, in a capacity that is unknown at this point (per Bild journalists Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl via @iMiaSanMia):

Uli Hoeneß is a big fan of Ralf Rangnick’s work. Even after the latter rejected Bayern’s coaching job last year, Hoeneß and Rangnick went golfing together in the summer and discussed the failed negotiations once again. Both have high regard for each other. Hoeneß can imagine Rangnick in a different role at Bayern. Rangnick’s name was already discussed at Bayern in February, as the club is still dissatisfied with the work and results at the Campus

A possible model that is being considered could be similar to Jürgen Klopp’s role as the new “Global Head of Soccer” at Red Bull. Rangnick would then help FC Bayern with his network and his vision in the youth area and scouting structures, but would also be a ‘backup’ for key positions such as board member for sport, sporting director or even coach, if there ever was a need

Rangnick is no longer happy in his role as Austria coach. The feeling from the Austrian FA is reportedly mutual

Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg (via @iMiaSanMia) played down the report, but did acknowledge that Rangnick has some fans in Bayern Munich’s front office:

There’s no contact between Bayern and Ralf Rangnick and no plans to bring him to the club in the coming months, although the 66-year old is generally appreciated by Uli Hoeneß and Bayern bosses.

Finally, Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund addressed the rumors in the best way that he could.

“Ralf Rangnick is doing a good job in Austria. He’s done a lot in football, has a lot of passion, and has held many important positions. I think he’s enjoying his job and feels comfortable in Austria,” Freund said (via @iMiaSanMia).

The part of the story from Bild talking about the campus is intriguing. Freund was supposed to have that sort of impact, but it has not come to fruition just yet. Regardless, having Rangnick on campus would like make quite a few folks feel a little uncomfortable.
