Sporting’s Viktor Gyökeres has moved to the top of the Arsenal striker list as they shortlist their summer transfer targets.
Although they have a clear preference for Gyökeres’s Swedish international colleague Alexander Isak, it is increasingly clear that Newcastle are likely to demand an exorbitant fee for him even if they do not qualify for the Champions League next season, and he would eat up too much of the transfer budget.
Instead Gyökeres is considered a more feasible and cheaper option, with Arsenal’s new Sporting Director, Andrea Berta, whose appointment has finally been confirmed by the club, along-term admirer.
Since joining Sporting from Coventry City in 2023, Gyökeres has become one of the most prolific strikers in Europe, scoring 85 goals and providing 26 assists in 92 games for the Primeira Liga club.
And, whilst there will always be questions about whether he can adapt to the pace of the Premier League, the fact that he has played in England before counts in his favour.
