Mohamed Salah and Liverpool contract saga far from over with Saudi Arabia ‘confident’

Mohamed Salah’s future is still yet to be decided as his contract at Liverpool ticks down, and interest from Saudi Arabia looks set to complicate matters once again.

As things stand, Salah’s contract will expire in the summer, meaning he will be able to leave Anfield for nothing at the end of the season should he wish to do so. He finds himself in the same boat as Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the latter looking set to join Real Madrid.

Unlike Alexander-Arnold, there have been recent suggestions that Salah is “closer than ever” to signing a new deal with Liverpool. It seems though that it is still far from a done deal.

According to The Telegraph, the Saudi Pro League remains confident that Salah is still considering a move to the Middle East this summer. It’s suggested that communication with the league is still open despite an offer being on the table from Liverpool.

Not only that, but one source is quoted as saying that Salah “remains interested” in a move to Saudi Arabia, and he believes that the Egyptian will be signed this summer once his contract at Anfield expires.

The 32-year-old is said to be prioritizing listening to Liverpool and seeing what the club has to offer. Salah has dropped numerous hints this season that he is in his final year with the Reds, although it was claimed earlier in the campaign that he was “desperate” to extend his stay on Merseyside, with his family settled in the area.

The winger has been linked with Saudi side Al-Hilal, with the defending Pro League champion having let Neymar go in order to allow itself to sign a new big-name foreign player. Salah certainly fits that bill, with his signing having been coveted by the Pro League for some time now after Al-Ittihad saw a $194 million bid rejected by Liverpool in 2023.

Should a move to Al-Hilal materialize though, it’s unlikely Salah would join in time to play for the club at this summer’s Club World Cup. The tournament starts in the United States on June 14, and there had been hope from the Saudi side that FIFA introducing a new “exceptional” transfer window from June 1 to June 10 – which has been adopted by the Premier League – could lead to Salah being involved.

Real Madrid could utilize this new window in order to sign Alexander-Arnold in time for the tournament, but Salah is not expected to follow suit, whatever decision he makes over his future at Liverpool.

Liverpool.com says: The interest from Saudi Arabia is always going to be there, so the ball is firmly in Salah’s court. It’s a question of whether he wants to keep breaking records at Liverpool, or whether he feels he’s done all he can at Anfield and wants to take up what will be a highly lucrative offer.

Given what he’s shown this season, it surely makes sense for him to stay at Liverpool a little longer. Whether it’s just another year, or two or three, there will always be a move to the Pro League on the table for him.
