Antonio Rudiger scored a 115th-minute winner as Real Madrid survived a major scare in an eight-goal thriller against Real Sociedad to seal their place in the Copa del Rey final for the second time in three seasons.
The key news before kick-off was that Carlo Ancelotti opted to drop Kylian Mbappe to the bench in an attempt to give him some rest amid the busy schedule.
While Mbappe was omitted from the lineup, Ander Barrenetxea came into Real Sociedad’s starting XI to get his side off to the perfect start, scoring in the 16th minute to cancel out Endrick‘s decisive goal from the first leg.
Endrick went on to restore Real Madrid’s aggregate advantage, as he became the first Real Madrid player since Cristiano Ronaldo to score at least five Copa del Rey goals in a single season.
The contest remained 1-1 on the night until it burst back into life with five goals in 21 minutes of exhilarating action.
La Real tuned the tie in their favour with a David Alaba own goal and Mikel Oyarzabal‘s deflected effort, before Jude Bellingham and Aurelien Tchouameni scored in the space of four minutes, only for Oyarzabal to level the tie in stoppage with his second goal of the game, ensuring the dramatic tie would head to extra time.
Unsurprisingly, the two teams were unable to maintain the high intensity as tired legs started to show in extra time, but just as the tie appeared to be heading to penalties, Rudiger rose high in the box to head home the decisive goal of a memorable semi-final tie.
Real Madrid will go on to play either Atletico Madrid or Barcelona in the final in Seville, while Real Sociedad fall at the semi-final stage for the second season in a row.
SPORTS MOLE’S VERDICT

From a neutral perspective, the closing stages of the regulation time were thrilling to watch as both teams tetered on the edge of elimination just before they clawed their way back into the tie.
However, Ancelotti would have been disappointed to see his team ship four goals against a Real Sociedad team that have often struggled in the final third this season.
Nevertheless, his side ultimately got the desired result, even though they had to dig deep and use their energy resources to squeeze past Real Sociedad.
As for the visitors, they will be downbeat after falling just short in their quest to eliminate Real Madrid, but Imanol Alguacil will be proud of the fight and character his team showed at the Santiago Bernabeu.

There were a number of impressive performances at the Santiago Bernabeu, but we are giving the nod to Oyarzabal despite ending up on the losing side in the tie.
The forward played a key role with two goals in the second leg, including a dramatic leveller in the third minute of stoppage time.
Real Sociedad lost their cutting edge when Oyarzabal and Kubo were withdrawn in extra time, highlighting their importance to the team’s attacking efforts.
