‘Star’: Coach says teenage talent Man Utd just missed out on is the new Lamine Yamal

Manchester United can boast some exciting talents.

The likes of Leny Yoro and Amad Diallo are prospects of genuine world class potential, while Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven have impressed since arriving from Arsenal.

Ruben Amorim also has talents such as Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo to call upon.

Manchester United did recently try to sign another wonderkid in Geovany Quenda – losing out to Chelsea – and salt has now been poured in the wounds by Tiago Teixeira.

Geovany Quenda compared to Lamine Yamal after Manchester United lose out

TBR Football understand Manchester United felt they were in pole position to sign Quenda before Chelsea swooped in with a £44m offer for the winger to join in July 2026.

That is a huge amount to spend on a relatively unproven 17-year-old, but the way the teenager is being spoken about, it could soon prove to be a bargain.

Teixeira – a coach at Sporting CP – even compares Quenda to Barcelona and Spain star Lamine Yamal, telling The Athletic: “I see similarities with Lamine Yamal. Both of them started playing senior football at 16, 17. Yamal is already playing for Spain but Quenda has just been called up by Portugal for the first time and I’m certain he’s going to be a regular in the national team for years to come, and a star of the Champions League.

“He will get better with age and keep growing in confidence. He has everything he needs.”

The Barcelona No.19 can already boast 13 goals and 18 assists in just 40 appearances this season at the age of 17 – while also playing a key role as Spain won UEFA Euro 2024 last summer – so it speaks volumes that Quenda has been likened to the Spanish prodigy.

Manchester United now interested in another – more established – prospect

After Chelsea snatched Quenda, TBR Football understand Manchester United are keeping an eye on Rayan Cherki at Lyon – ahead of facing the French side in the UEFA Europa League.

The Lyon No.18 is a more established senior player than Quenda, having already made 176 appearances for the Ligue 1 side at the age of just 21.

We understand Lyon would agree to sell Cherki for £25m this summer – much less than Chelsea paid for the Portuguese wonderkid – so Manchester United could yet outdo the Blues in the market.
