FC Barcelona could play a big role, albeit indirectly, in the Sané sweepstakes.

Arsenal FC has reportedly made contact with Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sané — and is currently in the midst of ongoing discussions for a possible move to the Premier League side in the summer.

However, it is not so straightforward…as Arsenal, and perhaps Bayern itself, both prefer Nico Williams — the EURO 2024 star and Spanish men’s national team winger who has been coveted by FC Barcelona.

There are currently talks ongoing between Arsenal and Leroy Sané’s representatives over a potential summer free transfer. Nevertheless, Arsenal’s priority for the wings is Nico Williams, who is also wanted by Bayern and Barcelona [@altobelli13, @cfbayern]

BFW Analysis

This is the most interesting transfer poker to watch in the coming months for Bayern.

There is a legitimate case both for allowing Sané to move on — to accelerate the refresh of a winger group that is older and very highly-paid amid the squad’s desire to trim salaries — but also an argument for a player of his quality to stay on a cut-rate deal.

The risk for Bayern? If they wait, options could come off the table. Namely, Sané could lock in a more appealing option elsewhere and take it. But the German winger seems to like his situation and his teammates in Bavaria, and if potential alternatives like Arsenal are also waiting to see how the dominoes fall elsewhere…then it’s a waiting game for everyone.

Nico Williams could be the key. Does Barça have the levers to pull this off?
