Alexander Isak has become the first Newcastle player in 23 years to score at least ten Premier League goals both home and away.

The Magpies striker fired in his 20th top-flight goal of the campaign on the stroke of half time of their clash against Brentford at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.

Isak found the back of the net in stoppage-time of the first half in what is his tenth goal on home soil this season.

It was a routine finish for the Sweden forward, who tapped the ball home as he connected with a sublime Jacob Murphy cross from the right to finish a swift Magpies counter-attack.

Isak was helped by tracking Bees player Bryan Mbeumo slipping over as he tried to head the ball away before it got to the goalscorer.

But take nothing away from the Newcastle hero, who has been sublime this term, and ever since he walked through the door at St James’ Park.

In doing so, Isak has become just the third Newcastle star after Alan Shearer and Andy Cole to record double digits in terms of goals both in Tyneside and on the road.

Manchester United legend Cole was the first to do so – achieving the feat in the 1993/94 term.

He found the back of the net on 24 occasions at St James’ Park, with 12 of his strikes coming away from home.

The Premier League’s all-time top scorer Shearer had been the last Newcastle player to match Cole‘s record following his impressive 2001/02 season.

Of his 23 top-flight goals, 12 came in front of his adoring supporters at home, with 11 coming on his travels.

Isak’s latest goal has also seen him become the third player this season to break the 20-goal mark in the Premier League.

Match Stats

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah currently leads the Golden Boot race with 27 goals.

He is followed by Manchester City marksman Erling Haaland, who has been the divisions top scorer in the last two years.

The Norway international has found the back of the net on 21 occasions.

But it remains to be seen whether he will add to his tally with the player currently sidelined due to an ankle injury.

For Isak, he will be hoping his goal against Brentford proves crucial in the club’s quest to return to the Champions League.

Victory over the Bees will see them leapfrog above fourth-placed Chelsea, who host London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday night.

Should Eddie Howe‘s men claim all three points, it will be their tenth league win from their last 14 matches.
