Ange Postecoglou would have had every reason to be frustrated after Tottenham Hotspur suffered their 16th defeat in the Premier League this season after they lost 1-0 to Chelsea.
Joe Hart suggested Postecoglou seems frustrated at Tottenham and Spurs’ latest result against Enzo Maresca’s side would not have done much to help inspire his mood whatsoever.
Tottenham were toothless for much of their visit to Stamford Bridge and on another day, they could have been punished far more harshly than they were on Thursday. But Enzo Fernandez’s one and only goal meant Chelsea could give the home fans a night to remember in any case.
Ange Postecoglou cut a forlorn figure at full-time after Tottenham’s loss to Chelsea and Jamie Redknapp noticed that.
Jamie Redknapp notices friction between Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham fans v Chelsea
Sky Sports presenter Dave Jones observed that Postecoglou chose not to thank the Tottenham fans for their support after their disappointing result against Chelsea: “Ange Postecoglou looks like he is going to leave the pitch. There was a suggestion during the game there was a bit of to and fro between him and Spurs fans.”
“While the Spurs players have gone to the away section to thank them for their support he has stayed away here. He has stayed closer to the halfway line. He has encouraged his players to go over but Ange Postecoglou very much has kept his distance.”
Jamie Redknapp added that in his view, the reason why Ange Postecoglou did not applaud the Tottenham fans is because there is a disconnect between him and them after how he reacted in the aftermath of their clash against Chelsea.
“He [Ange Postecoglou] made a couple of subs and I don’t think it went down too well with the Tottenham fans. He is the manager and when they scored it looked like he cupped his hands to the spurs fans as if to say I know better. Normally, he would be over there clapping them, there is a disconnect between the two of them at the moment but there are some big games ahead. He has to keep his head up, keep working hard and believing in what he is trying to do.”
What happened between Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham fans during Chelsea clash
Considering how loved Postecoglou seemed to be by Spurs fans during his debut campaign, a potential breakdown in the relationship between both parties is a sad sight to see.
However, things change at the drop of a hat in football as at the end of the day, it is a results business.
Postecoglou cupped his ears in Tottenham fans’ direction after Pape Matar Sarr’s goal that was eventually disallowed.
Ange Postecoglou’s blunt response to the away fans was because they chanted “You don’t know what you’re doing” after he took Lucas Bergvall off and brought Sarr on — perhaps proving Jamie Redknapp right that things are starting to turn toxic as was evidenced against Chelsea.
