Chelsea have had a strange season so far.

Chelsea looked like title contenders before Christmas as they put together a great run of form to open the campaign.

However, since the turn of the year, the Blues have been all over the place, and their form has dipped.

Chelsea lack leadership, this young team doesn’t have enough experience, and they perhaps need some calmer heads in the dressing room to help them through these periods.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Joe Cole has been discussing Chelsea’s lack of leadership, and he’s suggested a signing that could help the Blues in this area.

Joe Cole says Danny Welbeck would be a good signing for Chelsea

Cole, alongside a panel of pundits, was discussing Chelsea’s leadership vacuum.

The pundit was asked to name which player he thinks could do a job for Chelsea as a leader, and he said that Danny Welbeck could fit that bill.

Welbeck has enjoyed a career resurgence recently. Gary Neville said Welbeck would be perfect for Man Utd recently, and now, Cole has said that he could be great for Chelsea.

“They need experience, they don’t teach you how to be a better player. To be a better professional, young lads don’t know, and an experienced player would tell you that,” Joleon Lescott said.

“Who comes to mind to do that job?” The host asked.

“Someone like a Danny Welbeck. It would’ve been insane to sign him at 33 or 34, but he’s scored more goals than any Chelsea centre-forward. On the pitch, technically, it would’ve worked,’ Cole said.

“Him as a player who has done it all, a good lad who can set the culture, that springs off the top of my mind.”

Joe Cole says Danny Welbeck would be a good option for Chelsea, and when you look at the stats, it’s hard to disagree.

Welbeck was never the most prolific striker in the world, but he continues to score at a decent rate, while his overall experience would be invaluable to this side.

Welbeck has, of course, played for top clubs and won major titles before.

Welbeck played for Arsenal between 2014 and 2019 when he was released by the Gunners, while he spent the early part of his career at Manchester United where he won two Premier League titles.

As Cole says, this does sound like a crazy idea, but maybe, just maybe, this is the type of signing Chelsea need to progress to the next level.
