Newcastle have enjoyed a special 2025 so far.
Eddie Howe led the Magpies to their first major domestic trophy in 70 years with a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Wembley in March to secure the Carabao Cup, a result which prompted wild scenes on Tyneside.
Newcastle are also in a fantastic position to qualify for the UEFA Champions League – currently sitting fifth in the Premier League after beating Brentford on Wednesday.

Even fifth could secure UEFA Champions League qualification – depending on how Aston Villa, Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea fare in Europe for the rest of this season.
Off the pitch – however – there has now been a club announcement which Newcastle fans are very happy about.
Newcastle United fans celebrate as Fabian Schar signs new contract
Fabian Schar is clearly a popular man at St James’ Park – as the Toon Army on X (previously known at Twitter) are delighted to hear he has signed a new contract.
The Switzerland international was set to leave as a free agent when his deal expired in June, but has now put pen to paper on new terms which run until the end of the 2025/26 campaign.
One Newcastle fan wrote “we need a chant for him ASAP (as soon as possible)” after hearing the news – eager to let the Swiss defender know how appreciated he is on Tyneside.

A second Newcastle supporter then claimed that Schar is “one of our all timers” in what can only be described as effusive praise – adding that they “hope he gets a proper send off” when the time does eventually come to depart.
Another year of handsome Fab, can only assume that’s his last season as well. Hope he gets a proper send off, pound for pound one of our all timers. https://t.co/ugoHrWnu2l

Furthermore, another Newcastle fan described the club announcement as “phenomenal” – adding that the £3m signing of Schar from Deportivo in July 2018 is “one of the best” deals the Magpies have ever done.
Phenomenal !
Still one of THE best bits of business weve done ! https://t.co/8fgvwaLUws

A fourth Newcastle fan simply posted the word “stunning” – clearly a big fan of the man born in Wil.

Elsewhere, another supporter added that it is “brilliant news” to hear the 33-year-old will stay for another season, at least.

Last but not least, a sixth Newcastle fan predicted that Schar – who considered leaving – will opt to retire at the club, rather than move elsewhere after his time on Tyneside comes to an end.

The Newcastle players who are yet to have their futures decided
Schar – who was a Rafa Benitez signing – can breathe a bit easier now heading into the summer, without the uncertainty regarding his future weighing on his shoulders, although a few are yet to be afforded such a luxury.
Callum Wilson, Jamaal Lascelles, Mark Gillespie, John Ruddy and Jamal Lewis all become free agents in June as things stand – so if the situation does not change, they may be seeing out their final weeks as Newcastle players between now and the end of the season.
