It wasn’t long ago that Liverpool were being discussed as the very best team on the planet.

Indeed, Liverpool were on track to win a treble at one point as they’d breezed through the Champions League group stages and made the League Cup final with relative ease.

However, within the space of a week, Liverpool were dumped out of the Champions League and also lost the Carabao Cup final to Newcastle United.

Liverpool were poor in the cup final, and speaking on Sky Sports, Gary Neville has been looking back at that game.

Liverpool were expected to beat Newcastle, but it didn’t turn out that way.

The pundit says that he was really surprised by Liverpool’s performance on the day, noting that the Reds simply didn’t turn up.

Gary Neville shocked by Liverpool’s performance vs Newcastle

Neville spoke about Liverpool’s recent form and their performance against Newcastle specifically.

The pundit says that Liverpool really didn’t turn up against Newcastle at Wembley, claiming that he was shocked by this showing.

“It was a bad week for them, everything was on the table for them, but they had the wind taken out of their sails a bit. We were at Wembley which was a great day for Newcastle, but they didn’t turn up Liverpool on the day and that was really surprising. And I think PSG are a good side, they just lost the better of a tough tie on that one, but with Newcastle, it was different.”

Carabao Cup final stats analysed

Liverpool were poor against Newcastle at Wembley, and the stats show it.

Indeed, Liverpool just weren’t at the races on the day, and the numbers showcase just how poor the Merseyside club were.

Newcastle
1 Goals 2
7 Shots 17
2 Shots on target 6
4 Corners 9
1.26 Expected goals 2.06
64% Posession 36%

Of course, there were extenuating factors that made this game much harder for the Reds.

Jarrell Quansah had to start at right-back after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury, which was far from ideal, while their opponents, Newcastle, were bang up for this game after 70 years without a trophy.

Ultimately, the Carabao Cup final was just one of those days for Liverpool, but a win against Everton in midweek put the Merseyside club back on track and this is still set to be a memorable season as Liverpool close in on the Premier League title.
