Liverpool secured a narrow 1-0 win over Everton on Wednesday night thanks to a goal from Diogo Jota.

The Portugal international struck in the 57th minute to hand the Reds all three points, restoring their 12-point lead over Arsenal in the Premier League.

However, it was not a game without controversy.

James Tarkowski should have been sent off for a reckless lunge on Alexis Mac Allister – which could have broke the Argentine’s leg – while Luis Diaz was also in an offside position in the buildup to the goal.

There was also a strange decision made by Samuel Barrott in stoppage time, which denied Liverpool a glorious chance to make it 2-0.

Advantage ought to have been played while Jordan Pickford was out of goal

In a desperate search for an equaliser, Jordan Pickford charged up the pitch for a late corner in stoppage time with roughly two minutes left to play.

The England international did not manage to get a touch on the ball, with Caoimhin Kelleher instead winning Liverpool a freekick, which Barrott blew for instantly.

However, given the fact Pickford was nowhere near his goal, and Liverpool actually had possession of the ball when the whistle blew for a foul, giving advantage would have been a wiser call, as the Reds had an open goal to attack with a minute left on the clock.

When is the earliest Liverpool can win the Premier League title?

The earliest Liverpool – who want Marc Guehi – can officially become Premier League champions is Sunday 20th April against Leicester at the King Power Stadium.

Should Arsenal lose against Everton and Brentford – their next two games – and Liverpool defeat Fulham and West Ham, it would leave the Gunners 18 points behind with 18 left to play for.

Should the north Londoners then lose or draw to Ipswich on April 20th before Liverpool take on the Foxes, the Reds would be crowned champions, regardless of their result against Leicester.
