Gabriel Martinelli is preparing for one of the biggest games of his career with Arsenal set to host Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals, however, the Brazilian could have been in white on Tuesday.
Martinelli was linked with a move to Madrid back in 2020 having made a quick impression as a teenager at the Emirates Stadium.
The Brazillian’s career since hasn’t quite gone as expected with rumours emerging that Arsenal are open to selling Martinelli in the summer.
However, his recent form for the Gunners since returning from injury makes him a key player for Mikel Areteta’s side and he looks set to start against the club who failed to sign him almost five years ago.
What Gabriel Martinelli said about Real Madrid’s interest in 2020
Gabriel Martinelli revealed back in 2020 that he would rather remain at Arsenal and become a legend instead of signing for another major European club.
The Daily Mail were among the outlets reporting that the winger was a player on the list of Real Madrid and there was fear at the Emirates that they could lose the talented teenager.
However, Martinelli, whose performance against Chelsea was praised, quickly moved to quash those rumours by stating at the time his desire to stay and win the Champions League in North London.
When asked about interest from abroad, Martinelli told FourFourTwo: “I want to win the Champions League and lots of domestic titles to make Arsenal’s fans very happy.
“They deserve the best – not only the supporters but all of the club’s staff. I’d like to give back to the club after everything they’ve done for me so far and, as a result, become a Gunners legend.”
Martinelli and Arsenal will surely fancy their chances of completing their dream of winning the European Cup, although they now face the mighty test of overcoming Madrid.
How Gabriel Martinelli could hurt Real Madrid
Given his impressive performance against Fulham, Martinelli should be licking his lips at the prospect of facing Lucas Vazquez on Tuesday.
Vazquez was also in action during midweek, however, the Spanish international had a tough evening against Real Sociedad.
The Spanish media were less than kind about his display in the Copa del Rey semi-final match as they reacted online.

Managing Madrid | 4/10 | The goal conceded in the first half was not entirely on Lucas, there were several breakdowns that led to the goal but it’s true that Lucas lacks the athleticism, speed, and overall defensive tactical acumen to be starting match after match for Real Madrid at right back. |
Goal | 5/10 | He decided, very generously, to give Barrenetxea a free run towards goal for the first, which was practically his defining moment of the night. |
The 23-year-old’s explosive speed and ability in one-on-one situations could be the secret weapon for Arteta’s team next week.
