Virgil van Dijk teases Liverpool announcement timeframe in clearest contract message yet

Virgil van Dijk has teased that an announcement on his future will be made in the coming weeks amid the ongoing uncertainty over his Liverpool contract.

As things stand, the Reds captain will leave Anfield in the summer as his contract expires. Van Dijk finds himself in the same boat as Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the latter looking to be edging toward a move to Real Madrid.

There is still hope that the other two players will extend their stays on Merseyside, although Salah continues to be the subject of interest from Saudi Arabia. Van Dijk, meanwhile, has insisted that nobody yet knows what he will do this summer.

The defender recently suggested he still has “no idea” whether he will sign a new contract with Liverpool, meaning he could yet be playing his final few games for the club. That scenario was put to Van Dijk as he spoke to fans during an event following Wednesday’s win over Everton.

In a video posted online, Van Dijk can be seen answering a question from a supporter, who asks him how it feels to know he may have played in his final Merseyside derby, and whether he had any more news on his future.

“I can’t say more than there will be news in the upcoming weeks, whether it’s positive or not,” Van Dijk responded. “I have no idea at this point, well I don’t know, I mentioned it many times before, I said I am calm.

“Like I said also many times before, you know I love the club, and the club loves me. I love playing for Liverpool.

“At this stage, I’m not really panicking whatsoever, so let’s see.”

While Van Dijk isn’t giving too much away on whether he will be staying, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has made his own feelings clear, insisting he wants the defender to stay beyond the current campaign.

“The only thing I know is that I want Virgil to be here next season,” Slot said last month. “The rest is talks about the contract and that is not what I do over here.”

Liverpool.com says: Well, it’s encouraging to know that there will be an announcement soon either way – although “the upcoming weeks” is still a little vague. Liverpool fans will be hoping it’s sooner rather than later, and that it will involve Van Dijk putting pen to paper on a new contract at Anfield.
