Make or break, and he went for break…or did he?
Fans want heads rolling after Bayern Munich forcibly ended Thomas Müller’s chapter at the club. Lots of factors are at play, but apparently director of sport Max Eberl “admitted” to committing a Christoph Freund-ian slip during a discussion of the timeline of these events.
“I knew it could go the other way. I made a mistake and was too euphoric in January. I understand that Thomas went into the talks with that feeling and that he was disappointed afterwards,” Eberl revealed (Sport1-Doppelpass as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “I told him I hadn’t slept well for three days beforehand. It wasn’t nice, but you have to make decisions in the context of FC Bayern.
For context, Eberl was quoted as saying in January about Müller: “He doesn’t need to negotiate much. If he says he wants to continue, we’ll look each other deeply in the eyes, review the squad, and then it’ll move forward.”
BFW Analysis
Something feels amiss with these comments. The fact that Eberl wanted a minimal fuss extension for Müller is exactly what everyone wanted to happen. Then, out of nowhere, someone decided to do the complete opposite. If they wanted to extend him, why not decide on it right then? Why wait this long only to do a 180 on what is in essence the right track to get an extension? The way Eberl said these also feels unusual. I’m not pointing fingers, but something doesn’t add up here.
