A debacle of the highest order…
Bayern Munich backtracking on their intent to extend club legend Thomas Müller has fans feeling surprised, confused, hurt, angry, disappointed, and the like. There are questions asked about the club on how they could come to that decision, but it can be traced back to this: how and why did this happen?
“We had our first conversation with Thomas in mid-March, and the decisions about squad planning were made at the beginning of March,” Max Eberl said (Sport1-Doppelpass via @iMiaSanMia). “Once everything was approved, we wanted to communicate the decision to Thomas.”

“Christoph and I had the first conversation with Thomas. Thomas wanted another one with the coach present. We said, ‘No problem at all.’ Then there was another conversation with Jan-Christian Dreesen. It was about the farewell game and marketing matters. Those aren’t my topics, so I wasn’t there in the end.”
Eberl also mentioned about how Müller wanted to go through the proper process of getting an extension, but someone found a loophole there and the whole thing blew up in their faces. “I can totally understand the emotional side,” Eberl quipped. “Everyone at the club felt the same way. It’s the same for us. It’s an uncomfortable situation for us, but at some point you have to make rational decisions. Of course, Thomas was angry and disappointed. But not everything was ruined. He didn’t want a ‘folklore’ contract. What he wanted was: If so, then do it right. And not go through the back door. We were happy that Thomas will still play at the Club World Cup. This photo [after the agreement] was a request from Thomas.”
