The injury list just keeps growing for the European clubs…

Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck is the latest name in a long line of injuries for every club participating in European competitions this season.

As captured by @MiiaSanMia, the young center-back has torn his meniscus. While an exact downtime may differ depending on the severity of the injury, he has been ruled out of the rest of Dortmund’s season. It goes without saying that he will miss the upcoming Champions League quarterfinal matches against FC Barcelona, coached by Bayern Munich alum Hansi Flick, and the Bundesliga game against Flick’s former employers in between.

The news will also be a big hit to Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann as the national coach prepares to get his team ready for the Nations League Finals. As the finals are held in Germany, fan expectations will be quite high, and the national coach will have to deal with quite a headache as to how to replace Schlotterbeck. It was bad enough when Jamal Musiala’s hamstring tear jeopardized his participation in the June international break, and now Germany has lost one of its most reliable defenders.

It remains to be seen whether Schlotterbeck will be fit to play in the Nations League Finals, or at least the upcoming Club World Cup. Dortmund are one of the two German participants, the other being Bayern, and having been handed a rather favorable group in Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), Fluminense FC (Brazil), and Ulsan HD (South Korea), the Black and Yellows will be aiming as high as possible. Schlotterbeck’s injury cannot be good news for them as they gear up for the summer tournament.
