‘He’ll leave’: Alan Shearer thinks £63m Arsenal striker target will definitely leave his club this summer

4 Min Read

By all estimations, Arsenal are in the hunt for a new striker to boost Mikel Arteta’s squad this summer.

Earlier in the season it looked as if Arsenal were spoilt for choice in the striker department for once – Gabriel Jesus was scoring regularly and Kai Havertz was also contributing goals himself.

However, fast-forward a month and the Gunners lost both of their number nines to season-ending injuries, meaning that Mikel Merino has been playing as a striker.

Of course, even with Jesus and Havertz fully fit in the past, pundits and fans have been crying out for Arteta to recruit a striker who can score 20 goals a season.

And with former Atletico Madrid mastermind Andrea Berta at the helm this summer, Arsenal will be hoping to do exactly that.

Alan Shearer thinks Matheus Cunha will leave Wolves this summer

Soon after he arrived in north London, Berta recommended Matheus Cunha to Arsenal, a striker he had previously signed for Atletico before he then left for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

And given that Arsenal wanted Cunha even before Berta shared his ideas, it seems as if a move for the £63m Brazilian could certainly have legs.

That being said, Alan Shearer discussed Cunha’s situations at Wolves on the ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast after watching the weekend’s Premier League action.

And when discussing Vitor Pereira and his Wolves side, Shearer could only conclude that Cunha would find a new club in the summer.

Shearer said: “He’s got Cunha, who’s a very, very good player, but he knows that he’s a bit of a maverick and he’s been suspended for the last four games.

“They’ve won three and drawn one.

“My guess is that he signed a contract, perhaps, to get Wolves some money in the summer, which would have a close in there.

“So he’ll leave in the summer and someone will buy him. So I don’t suspect he’ll play a big part in what Wolves do in the future.”

Is Matheus Cunha the striker who Arsenal need?

Of course, some will question whether Cunha is a ‘proper’ number nine – perhaps he would be better suited to a wide role at the Emirates Stadium.

Therefore, it might actually be a case of signing Cunha or Nico Williams, a Spain international who is of particular interest to Arsenal too.

Berta has held talks with Williams’ camp regarding a potential move this summer – Arsenal’s new sporting director is certainly not wasting time.

And whether it’s Cunha or Williams, perhaps they would actually arrive alongside a more traditional striker, someone like Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko perhaps.

Alexander Isak is Arteta’s first choice striker but with Newcastle United looking likely to qualify for a Champions League spot, he’s looking less and less likely to leave.
