Bayern Munich’s coach sounds eager to get this game going…

Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany knows how banged up his team is, but he thinks whoever takes the pitch vs. Inter Milan in the Champions League will be ready for the challenge.

“We’re looking ahead and expecting the guys who will be playing tomorrow and who are here to perform and get the results for us. We mustn’t forget that the guys who will play tomorrow have all been part of our journey to where we are now. I don’t want to complain — I don’t want to change my goals because we have injuries. My thoughts are only on what can happen if we perform at our best,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “They’re a team that always finds its moments, they’re dangerous—not just on the counterattack. They’re also good at build-up play and set pieces. They score a lot of goals because they have very good players. But we do that too; we score a lot of goals as well.”

One thing that does concern Kompany is Inter Milan’s defensive prowess.

“You don’t usually score many goals against Leverkusen either – but you have to have faith in it. It’s not about the game itself, but about the moments. There may also be set pieces for us – we have to be there in those moments. We can talk tactically about what Inter does well. But there’s also character, heart, and emotion. That’s all part of it; we showed in the last round against Leverkusen that we can do that. What’s important to me is that we’re mentally ready tomorrow and show our personality,” Kompany remarked.

One aspect of the game that Kompany has thought a lot about was how to best replace Jamal Musiala in the starting XI.

“I don’t want to reveal too much information. We’ve already played without Jamal – we can find solutions, including creative solutions that we have at our disposal. For me, it’s all about tomorrow; we can’t replace Jamal like-for-like – so we have to solve it collectively,” Kompany stated.

Finally — and this was inevitable — Kompany was asked about Bayern Munich’s decision walk away from Thomas Müller after the season. Kompany, again, tried to distance himself from the controversy.

“Preparing for Inter has been our priority in recent days. Not just for me, but for the entire coaching staff and all the players. But we have to respect that there’s a lot of discussion involved when a legend as great as Thomas Müller announces his departure from the club; that’s understandable and a good thing. My role, however, is to ensure that training is right and that we make the right decisions about who plays and who doesn’t,” said Kompany.
