Virgil van Dijk admitted there has been ‘progress’ over a new Liverpool contract.

The Reds captain will become a free agent at the end of this season having last extended his deal in 2021.

An exit would end Van Dijk’s seven-and-a-half-year stay at Anfield in a potential triple blow to supporters.

Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contracts are also set to expire at the end of June.

Alexander-Arnold has already agreed terms to join Real Madrid on a free transfer in the summer.

However, Van Dijk has now provided a fresh update on his own contract negotiations.

Speaking following Sunday’s defeat to Fulham, telling reporters: “There is progress, yeah.”

When asked if he would be at Liverpool next season, he added: “I don’t know, we’ll see. Listen, these are internal discussions and we’ll see.

“I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again and we wanted to reward them.

“But I want them to be there Sunday again (at home to West Ham United) and make the stadium an amazing venue like always for us.”

Van Dijk has made 313 appearances for the club since signing from Southampton in January 2018.

He has also scored 26 goals from defence across those matches.

The Dutch centre-back has won eight trophies with Liverpool including the Champions League and Club World Cup.

Van Dijk remains set to add a second Premier League title to his tally this term despite the loss at Craven Cottage.

Arne Slot’s side suffered just their second league defeat of the season as they were beaten 3-2 by the Cottagers.

It ended a 26-match unbeaten run in the Premier League dating back to September.

Reflecting on the defeat, Van Dijk said: “It was a poor day at the office for all of us.

“There were individual moments that should have been dealt with better. It was not acceptable as a team.

“First half, we scored a great goal, but we let them back into the game with sloppiness from ourselves and these things shouldn’t happen.

“Obviously second half we went one-v-one, we were trying as quickly as possible to get the second goal, we took a lot more risk. We tried to turn it around but unfortunately we couldn’t do it.

“On the first half, you can’t argue with the result. We have take it on the chin and try to beat West Ham next week.”

Liverpool remain 11 points clear of Arsenal with seven matches remaining this term.
