8 games… Leicester City just made English football history against Newcastle – for all the wrong reasons

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City continued their torrid form with a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Monday night, leaving them four points adrift of safety.

A brace from Jacob Murphy and a third from Harvey Barnes before halftime at the King Power saw the Foxes’ survival hopes shrink again.

Ex-Manchester United star Van Nistelrooy replaced struggling Steve Cooper in November but has failed to turn the club’s fortunes around.

Van Nistelrooy has enjoyed very little success at Leicester City since initially picking up points against West Ham and Brighton. Now, he has picked up an unfortunate English football record.

Leicester make history with no goals in eight home games

The Foxes’ terrible form at the King Power means they become the first team in English football to lose eight league games in a row at home – without even scoring a goal.

They broke the Premier League record by losing 4-0 to Brentford in February, becoming the competition’s first team to lose six in a row at home without scoring. Now, their home form is the worst of any team in English football, top-flight or not.

The awful run began in December, just 23 days into the Dutchman’s reign, when Leicester lost to Wolves. At the time, Leicester were just outside the relegation zone and Wolves were breathing down their necks.

Now, Vitor Pereira has moved Wolves twelve points clear of the drop, and Leicester are four points from safety. They’ve picked up just three points in that time.

The only other team in Premier League history who have failed to score in eight home league games in a row is Manchester City in 2007, and they managed to draw two of those games.

When was the last time Leicester City scored?

The Foxes haven’t scored since Bobby De Cordova-Reid’s opener in their FA Cup tie against Manchester United on 7th February, which they went on to lose 2-1.

To find a goal in the league, you have to go back to 26th January and their only win of 2025 so far – a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. Even that was away from home.

Their most recent goals at the King Power came in Van Nistelrooy’s first two matches in charge there, a 3-1 win over West Ham and a 2-2 draw with Brighton.

Those five goals, scored on the 3rd and 8th of December, are still the only Premier League goals Leicester have netted at home under Van Nistelrooy.
