Kompany has STILL got it.
Harry Kane has been managed by some really notable managers. He has worked under people such as Mauricio Pochettino, José Mourinho, Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel. The latest coach in charge of getting the best out of him is Vincent Kompany at Bayern Munich. And, despite a less than perfect resumé, it seems that the former Tottenham Hotspur striker really likes Kompany.
“I’ve been really enjoying my time with him. I think he’s a great coach on the pitch,” the England captain said in a recent interview with Bundesliga’s official English account (via @iMiaSanMia). “The way he wants us to play, the way we should be trained, the improvements he wants from everyone. And also, he has a great personality off the pitch.
“I think he sets the standards. He’s not afraid to tell it how it is. No matter who you are, whether you’ve played, 500 games or one game, he’ll treat you the same. And I think he’s earned the respect of the players in that sense. So, again, learning with him, different ways, tactical ways, and it’s helped me improve in certain aspects.”
But Kompany is not just a good coach. He was a phenomenal player in the Premier League and he retains a good chunk of these qualities, even as he approaches 40 years of age.
“He’s still got a bit, to be honest. I think he reads the game really well, which is a big part of him as a defender, his football brain,” Kane added (via @iMiaSanMia). “Maybe physically he’s just lost a little bit, but to be honest, there’s been a few tackles and he gets involved in the shooting and the standards are still pretty high.”
The joke that Vincent Kompany could look to step in during Bayern’s recent defensive injury crisis and play of course makes no sense as the Belgian is not registered to play in the league. But perhaps, if he were able to play, he could genuinely have been a great option for Bayern. How funny is that?
