Jamie Carragher is no stranger to sharing a strong opinion as a pundit.
Indeed, Carragher isn’t afraid to be outspoken, even when it’s about his own club.
Jamie Carragher has praised and criticised everyone at Liverpool over the years – Carragher has called out Jurgen Klopp in the past, while Carragher has argued with Gary Neville when defending the Reds too.
Speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher has been discussing his punditry and how sometimes what he says on Sky Sports can backfire.
Carragher says that Daniel Sturridge actually confronted him at one point after the pundit had claimed he should be sold by Liverpool, a move that Carragher actually respected.
Nowadays, Sturridge himself is a pundit alongside Carragher on Sky Sports.
Daniel Sturridge confronted Jamie Carragher
Carragher spoke about Sturridge confronting him and having that uncomfortable conversation.
The pundit says he actually didn’t back down from his stance that Sturridge should be sold, but the situation was all handled amicably.
“Yeah, I mean, there’s one player with me, it was Daniel Sturridge. He was still playing at the end with Klopp, and it was funny. You wouldn’t believe this, but when I’d stopped playing for a couple of years, Liverpool asked me and Stevie Gerrard to go on the end of season game in Australia. You wouldn’t believe, Liverpool couldn’t sell the tickets to fill out the stadium. So they asked me, Stevie, and Steve McManaman to play with the team,” Carragher said.
“So we ended up playing, and I’d said, they need to sell Daniel’s Sturridge. He fronted me in the dressing room when we got over there. And you know what?
“I was a bit like fair play. You know what I mean? Good on you.
“But there’s nothing worse, I think, if someone backs down. So I wasn’t going to back, not that it was a big argument, but sometimes, maybe if I was a player or a journalist, I might say something and he’d back down and go, oh, sorry, I didn’t mean it, no, we just front it.
“You’ve said it, you’ve said it, so back it up, yeah, yeah.”
The time Jamie Carragher phoned TalkSPORT
Carragher respected Sturridge for calling him out on his punditry, and that was a move straight from Carragher’s own playbook.
Indeed, Carragher was never afraid to hit back at what was said about him during his playing career, and, at one point, Carragher even phoned TalkSPORT to argue about his decision to retire from international duty.
Carragher was never afraid to stand up to pundits or journalists in his career, and Sturridge did the same to Carragher here.
Ultimately, Carragher probably was right about Sturridge. Injuries really hampered the striker during his final years at Liverpool, and he was eventually let go.
Sturridge regretted leaving Liverpool when he did, but, ultimately, that was the best decision for the club as the striker could barely stay fit from that point onwards.
