Bayern Munich lost for the first time in 23 Champions League home games on Tuesday against Inter Milan. In a game full of what ifs, one big missed chance stood out bigger than usual…Harry Kane’s curler bouncing off the post in the first half.
The English captain had been set up perfectly by Michael Olise, who found his striker in space and completely unmarked inside the box. Inter keeper Yann Sommer had little chance to cover that much of the net from this angle, and Kane had the better of him. But his shot was off — perhaps by not more than inches.
Still, it looked a sure goal, the type of chance a striker of Kane’s quality is expected to bury, in the sort of moment a Champions League winning side is expected to conjure.

“It doesn’t happen very often,” Kane lamented after the match (as captured by Sky Sport DE journalist Florian Plettenberg, via @iMiaSanMia). “That’s the life of a striker, sometimes it happens. It was one of those. It’s part of being a footballer. You have to take the highs with the lows.
“The good thing is that I’m getting chances. I’ll go into the game against Dortmund with the same confidence and hopefully get back in the score sheet.”
That too is part of the life as a striker — getting right back up and plugging back away. For Kane and Bayern, the goals should come again, soon. Perhaps at Der Klassiker we will see the floodgates open.
