Liverpool sent Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah contract boost with Reds ‘confident’ of extensions

Liverpool fans have been given another positive update on the futures of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, with claims the club is “confident” of securing new deals for both players.

The pairs’ current contracts expire at the end of the season and they could walk away for free this summer. Both have attracted interest from Saudi Arabia and been linked with moves to Paris Saint-Germain, but recent noises indicate that they will pen extensions at Anfield.

Van Dijk revealed after Sunday’s defeat at Fulham that there had been “progress” on talks but failed to be drawn on the matter, claiming these were “internal discussions”. As for Salah, he hasn’t spoken much of late in the media but recent reports have also indicated that he is close to signing fresh terms at Liverpool.

Journalist David Ornstein has since given an update and, speaking to NBC, said he expects Van Dijk and Salah to remain with Liverpool.

“It’s been my understanding throughout that Liverpool are confident [and] optimistic of renewing Van Dijk and now it’s a case of when rather than if he’ll put pen to paper, barring any last minute hitches,” the reporter explained.

“The talks, the negotiations have been positive and cordial – it’s the same situation with Mohamed Salah, Liverpool have been confident throughout that they will retain his services. Like I said with Van Dijk, it’s more a case of when rather than if that is going to happen now, and that will be really good news for them.”

Retaining the services of Van Dijk and Salah will be key ahead of what looks set to be a big summer for Liverpool. The Reds are expected to make several major signings following Arne Slot’s first summer in charge when just one new arrival came into the club.

Jamie Carragher has called for six additions to the squad, while several outgoing players are expected. Trent Alexander-Arnold is among them. The Liverpool defender, like Van Dijk and Salah, is free to walk away from the club in the summer and a move to Real Madrid is looking increasingly likely.

Should Van Dijk and Salah sign new contracts with the club, it will only add further scrutiny to Alexander-Arnold’s situation, although the 26-year-old is currently injured and therefore not available to play in Liverpool matches.
