Are dreams of Champions League Dahoam slipping away?

Bayern Munich lost 2-1 in the first leg of its Champions League quarterfinals tie with Serie A leaders Inter Milan.

In a bit of a perplexing match the Bavarians enjoyed initiative, shots, possession but ended up bottom in the scoreboard. They showed their best energy in the first 30’ but could not hit paydirt, and then had no sooner finally worn down the Italian side’s defenses — through who else but super-sub Thomas Müller — than got hit back again for a second.

Did Vincent Kompany have it right for this one and just get unlucky? You could argue that Bayern could have scored more goals. Or you could argue that this can always happen and Inter played a perfect counter-attacking gameplan — compacting the spaces in front of goal, forcing Bayern to get cute and creative to no avail, and taking advantage of gaps in the depleted defense on the other side.

Whatever the conclusion there is much to chew on from this one. For Kompany & company to stand a chance next Wednesday, they will need to work through what — and how much — went right or wrong this time around.

This author will give Bayern a 6.5/10 — some real bright spots but not enough to paper over the serious concerns. Next week might call for a rethink, though maybe not a wholesale one.

But what do you think? Let us know below.
